Filing Cabinet Price Guide 2026: What Used Cabinets Cost in the GTA by Drawer Count

Oct 20
3 min read

Filing cabinets look like a commodity — until you price them new. A commercial lateral file that costs $900 to $1,400 CAD new regularly sells used in the GTA for a third of that, in the same steel, with decades of life left. This guide sets out what used filing cabinets actually cost in 2026 by type and drawer count, and what separates a bargain from a problem.

At Ufficio Furniture in Mississauga, used filing cabinets from brands like Global, Teknion, Knoll, Herman Miller and Haworth move through our warehouse every week. Browse current stock on our used filing cabinets page (https://www.ufficiofurniture.com/used-filing-cabinets) and call 647-898-8918 for filing cabinet inquiries.

Used Prices by Type and Drawer Count, in CAD

Two-drawer cabinets — the under-desk and beside-desk size — typically run about $60 to $150 CAD used, depending on whether the unit is a lateral or vertical format and whether the lock works with a key included.

Three-drawer cabinets typically run about $120 to $225 CAD used. This is a popular size for personal and team storage: tall enough to matter, small enough to fit almost anywhere.

Four-drawer cabinets typically run about $175 to $325 CAD used. Vertical four-drawer units are the classic records cabinet; lateral four-drawer units give the same capacity with easier access and a worksurface on top.

Five-drawer lateral cabinets — the tall, wide files in this post's photo, like the Knoll unit shown — typically run about $250 to $400 CAD used. New equivalents are often $1,200 CAD or more, which is why used five-high laterals are among the best value-per-drawer buys in any office.

Mobile pedestals typically run $75 to $175 CAD used, and full-height storage cabinets and wardrobe towers vary widely with size and interior fittings — ask us what is on the floor this week.

Why Brand and Build Change the Price

Commercial brands build cabinets to be opened dozens of times a day for twenty years: heavier steel, full-extension ball-bearing slides, anti-tip interlocks that allow only one drawer open at a time, and locks that can be re-cored. That build quality is why a used Global, Teknion or Knoll cabinet at $250 CAD is a better buy than a new light-gauge cabinet at the same price — the used commercial unit will outlast it and feel solid every single day.

Finish affects price at the margins: clean, current colours in grey, black and putty sell fastest; cabinets with dents, rust at the base or missing keys price lower and can still be excellent buys for back rooms and warehouses.

What to Check Before You Pay

Open every drawer: slides should run smooth and quiet, drawers should close flush, and the interlock should stop a second drawer opening. Confirm the lock turns and a key is included — replacement keys and cores are available for major brands, but price a keyless cabinet accordingly. Check the cabinet is level and the body is square; a racked cabinet never draws properly. Finally, measure your files: lateral drawers take letter and legal folders side-by-side in most widths, while vertical drawers are front-to-back — buy the format your folders and your floor space actually need.

New Cabinets, When They Make Sense

If you need twelve identical cabinets in one finish, or a size that rarely comes up used, brand-new is the honest answer — our new filing and storage line can be ordered to match our brand-new desks, so a full office matches. Most offices do best with a blend: new where matching is critical, used commercial cabinets everywhere else, at a fraction of the cost.
