L-Shape Desk Sizing Guide: 5x5, 6x6 and 6x8 Layouts for GTA Offices (2026)

An L-shape desk gives you two work surfaces in the footprint of a corner: one for your computer, one for paperwork, a second monitor, a printer, or meeting with a visitor. It is the most popular desk shape we sell at Ufficio Furniture for managers, administrators, realtors, accountants, and anyone who multitasks at their desk. The question is rarely whether an L-shape will help — it is which size fits your room without crowding it.

This sizing guide walks through the three most common L-shape footprints in GTA offices — 5x5, 6x6, and 6x8 feet — and how to choose between them.

What the Numbers Actually Mean

An L-shape desk is measured along its two outer walls. A 6x6 desk extends six feet along the back wall and six feet along the side wall, usually made from a main desk surface plus a return. The return can go on the left or the right, so confirm handing before you order, especially for brand-new desks built to order. Depth is usually 24 or 30 inches per surface — deeper surfaces handle larger monitors and more paperwork, while 24-inch depths save floor space in tighter rooms.

Think about chair space as part of the footprint. Allow at least 36 inches behind the desk for your chair and movement, and more if a second person will sit on the visitor side or if a filing cabinet needs to open into that space.

5x5: The Compact Corner Solution

A 5x5 foot L-shape is ideal for small private offices, home offices in Toronto condos and GTA houses, and tight corners in open plans. It fits a laptop or single monitor comfortably on the main surface, with the return for paperwork, a phone, and personal storage. Pair it with a mobile pedestal underneath and a good ergonomic chair, and you have a complete workstation in a footprint that leaves the rest of the room usable.

Choose 5x5 if your office is roughly 8 by 10 feet or smaller, if the desk is for one focused user, or if you need to fit two workstations into a shared office. Be realistic about monitors: dual large monitors can feel crowded on a 5x5, so if screen space is your priority, step up a size.

6x6: The GTA Standard

The 6x6 is the size we recommend most often. It handles dual monitors easily, gives you a clear separation between computer work and paperwork, and fits comfortably in most standard private offices and cubicle-style layouts. There is room underneath for a pedestal and legroom, and the return makes a natural visitor edge for quick meetings.

For teams, 6x6 L-shapes also work back-to-back or in corner clusters, creating defined individual workspaces without full cubicle panels. Pricing in CAD depends on whether you choose brand new or used, fixed height or sit-stand, and what storage you add — a brand-new L-shape from our Ufficio line starts in the range illustrated on our product pages, with final quotes based on exact size, finish, and options. Used L-shapes, when available, cost less but are limited to the sizes and finishes on hand that week.

6x8: Room to Spread Out

A 6x8 L-shape is for executives, project managers, designers, and anyone whose work spreads across plans, files, and multiple screens. The longer return gives you a genuine second work zone — review documents on one side, work at the computer on the other — and often fits a lateral file or printer within reach.

Choose 6x8 only if the room can take it. In a small office it will dominate the space and block storage or door swings. In a larger office, it looks proportionate and professional, especially paired with matching storage and a guest chair. Sit-stand L-shape versions are also available in our brand-new lines for users who want adjustability across a larger surface.

Left, Right, and Sit-Stand Choices

Confirm whether you need a left or right return based on where doors, windows, and outlets sit. Consider a reversible design if you may move offices later. For sit-stand L-shapes, check that the lifting columns and frame fit the return layout and that cables have enough slack at full height.
