Straight Desks With a Pedestal in the GTA: One Desk, Locking Storage Included (2026)
A straight desk on its own is only half an office. Without storage, stationery ends up in a bag, files end up in a pile, and personal items end up wherever there is a spare surface. A straight desk with a pedestal solves that in one purchase: the desk gives you the work surface, and the pedestal underneath gives you locking drawers, without a second piece of furniture or a second delivery. Brand-new straight desks start from $295 CAD at Ufficio Furniture in Mississauga, and a pedestal configuration is the most practical way to order one. What a Pedestal Actually Is
A pedestal is a drawer unit that sits under or beside the desk, at desk height, so it supports the worksurface on one side. It usually comes in one of two layouts. A box-file pedestal has a shallow box drawer on top and a deeper file drawer below, which holds letter or legal hanging files. A box-box-file pedestal has two shallow drawers and one file drawer, which suits people who need more small-item storage and fewer files.
Both layouts lock, usually with a single key that secures all drawers at once. That lock matters more than it seems: it means you can leave a laptop cable, a wallet, a passport copy or client files in the desk at the end of the day without clearing them into a bag every evening. For shared offices, hot-desking and reception areas, that lock is the difference between a desk that works and a desk that nobody trusts.
Pedestal on the Left, Right, or Both?
Most straight desks take one pedestal, on the left or the right. The choice should follow your handedness and your room, not habit. Right-handed writers often prefer the pedestal on the right, where the dominant hand reaches the drawers naturally. But if the desk sits against a wall on the right, or a door opens on that side, the left pedestal is the better choice, because a drawer that cannot open fully is a drawer you will not use.
Two pedestals, one each side, suit wider 66- or 72-inch desks. Sit at both layouts in our showroom at 1215 Meyerside Drive, Unit 7, Mississauga before deciding, as legroom matters.
Sizes: Matching the Desk to the Job
A 48-inch straight desk with a pedestal suits a single-monitor setup, a small office or a home office where floor space is tight. A 60-inch version is the most popular all-round size: it holds dual monitors, a pedestal and room for paperwork without dominating a standard office. A 72-inch version suits managers, designers and anyone who spreads documents across the surface.
Depth matters too. A 24-inch deep desk is compact and suits computer-only work. A 30-inch deep desk gives room for a monitor arm, a document holder and a notebook at the same time, and it is the better choice if you work on paper as well as on screen. Our brand-new desks are made to order, so depth, width, pedestal layout and finish can be chosen together.
New Versus Used for a Pedestal Desk
Used straight desks with pedestals are common, and they can be good value, but there are two things to check. First, the lock: a used pedestal without a key, or with a damaged lock, is a storage unit you cannot secure, and re-keying adds cost. Second, the match: a used pedestal in one finish beside a used desk in another looks patched together, and the heights may not align perfectly.
Buying new removes both problems. The lock comes with keys, the pedestal matches the desk exactly in finish and height, and the whole unit arrives as one piece of furniture rather than two finds that almost fit. Because our desks are made to order in consistent finishes, a pedestal desk ordered today will still match a return, a hutch or a second desk ordered later.
Keeping a Pedestal Desk Organised
A pedestal only helps if it is organised. Put daily items in the top box drawer, where you can reach them without bending. Put active files in the file drawer, with hanging folders labelled by client or project, not by date alone. Reserve the second box drawer, if you have one, for personal items and cables, so they never migrate onto the worksurface.
Once a quarter, empty the file drawer completely and remove anything that has not been touched in a year. A pedestal that is full of dead files is no better than no storage at all, and it is the main reason people end up piling papers on their desk again.
