L-Shape Desks: Left Return vs Right Return — How to Choose (2026)

It is one of the most common desk-ordering mistakes we see: a beautiful L-shape desk arrives, and the return is on the wrong side. The desk still works, technically — but the drawers block the door swing, the return faces a wall instead of the window, and the layout never quite feels right. The good news is that left versus right takes about thirty seconds to get right once you know the rule. This guide from Ufficio Furniture explains it clearly.

The photo for this post (buro-products/l-shape-desk/combo-unit-wave-left.jpg) shows a brand-new L-shape combo unit from our made-to-order line, with the return on one side and a locking pedestal included — exactly the kind of configuration this guide helps you order correctly.

The Seated-Position Rule

Forget standing in front of the desk and pointing. Left and right are always judged from the seated working position. Sit where you will actually work, facing the main desk surface. If the return extends to your left hand, it is a left-return desk. If it extends to your right hand, it is a right-return desk.

That one rule prevents most errors, because showroom photos are often taken from the front, which flips everything visually. A desk that looks "left" in a photo taken face-on is a right return when you sit at it. When you order from us, tell us the return side from the chair, and also send a quick sketch of the room — belt and suspenders, and it costs nothing.

Doors, Windows, and Outlets Decide the Rest

Once you know how left and right are defined, the room itself usually makes the choice for you.

Start with the door. A return should never sit where a door swings into it or where it blocks the natural walking path into the office. Next, look at the window wall. Many people prefer the return along the window side, keeping the main surface facing the room so they can turn toward the light for paperwork or a second screen. Others want the main desk facing the window directly. Either works — what matters is deciding before the desk is built, not after it is installed.

Then check outlets and data. Your return will likely carry a printer, phone, or charging setup. Placing the return on the wall with the outlets avoids cables crossing the kneehole, which is both ugly and a daily annoyance. Also measure for radiators, vents, and columns; an L-shape uses a corner fully, so anything in that corner matters.

Corner Offices and Home Offices

In a corner office, the L-shape is the natural fit: main surface along one wall, return along the other, storage in the corner where the two meet. In a home office, the same logic applies in miniature — an L-shape turns a spare-room corner into a real workstation with a dedicated side for a laptop dock, paperwork, or a family computer, without taking a second desk's worth of floor space.

Think about which hand does what. If you write, sign, or sort paper while on the computer, put the return on your writing-hand side. If a second monitor or a printer matters more, give that side to the equipment instead.

Sizes and What Is Included

The most common L-shape sizes are 60x60 inches and 72x72 inches, measured along each wall. A 60x60 suits most home offices and standard private offices. A 72x72 gives a generous main surface for dual monitors plus real paperwork room, and is the better pick for executives and anyone who hosts small meetings at their desk.

Our new L-shape line is made to order, so sizes and finishes can be tailored to your room. Better still, combo units include a locking pedestal as standard — drawers for files and supplies, with a lock for the items that should stay private. No separate add-on to remember, and the pedestal is built to match the desk.

Typical prices for brand-new fixed-height L-shape desks run about $545–$895 CAD depending on size, finish, and configuration. See current options on our L-shape desk page, or start at Ufficio Furniture.
