Straight Desk Sizes Explained: 48, 60 or 72 Inches for Your GTA Office (2026)

Straight desks look simple, and that is their strength — but picking the wrong width is a daily frustration you cannot fix without buying again. Too small, and your monitors crowd out your keyboard and paperwork. Too big, and you waste floor space that could have held another workstation. This guide from Ufficio Furniture matches the three most common brand-new straight desk sizes — 48, 60, and 72 inches — to the work actually done at them.

The photo for this post (buro-products/desk/arc-top-full-modesty.jpg) shows a brand-new straight desk from our Ufficio white-label line, made to order with a full modesty panel. Every desk discussed here is brand-new, including the Workspace48 sit-stand options.

The 48-Inch Desk: Laptop-Only and Compact Work

A 48-inch straight desk is the right answer for focused, laptop-based work. It comfortably holds a laptop (ideally on a stand), an external keyboard and mouse, a notebook, and a phone — with room to breathe. It is the size we recommend for hot-desking rows, touch-down stations, student and home-office setups, and reception overflow desks.

What it does not do well is dual monitors plus paperwork. Two screens on a 48-inch top leave almost no open surface, and most people end up perching documents on their keyboard within a week. If your role is calls, email, and one application at a time, 48 inches is efficient and honest sizing. If it is more than that, size up now rather than twice.

The 60-Inch Desk: The Dual-Monitor Standard

For most GTA office workers, 60 inches is the sweet spot. Two monitors sit comfortably side by side, the keyboard stays centred, and there is still a clear patch of surface for a notebook, documents, or a coffee that is not in danger. It is the standard size for general office staff, administrators, sales teams, and anyone who splits attention between a CRM, email, and documents all day.

In benching rows — long runs of straight desks sharing legs or a central spine — 60-inch tops are the workhorse. They give each person a defined, generous station while keeping the run compact enough to fit real floor plans. For small teams furnishing a first office, a run of matching brand-new 60-inch desks looks professional immediately and can be reordered in the same finish as the team grows.

The 72-Inch Desk: Paperwork, Meetings, and Executive Work

Choose 72 inches when the desk itself is a work surface, not just a screen holder. That means roles with physical paperwork — accounting, legal, estimating, project management — where files, drawings, or binders need to lie open beside the monitors. It is also the right size for private offices where a manager hosts one or two guests, signs documents, and needs a clear presentation side to the desk.

The trade-off is floor space and cost per station. In an open area, those extra 12 inches per person add up across a row. Use 72-inch desks where the work justifies them, and 60-inch desks everywhere else.

Depth Matters Too: 24 vs 30 Inches

Width gets the attention, but depth changes comfort as much. A 24-inch-deep desk keeps a small room feeling open and works well for laptop and single-monitor setups. A 30-inch-deep desk puts the monitor at a healthier viewing distance, leaves room for a keyboard tray or large documents, and is the better choice for dual monitors and all-day screen work. When you order made-to-order desks from our new line, depth is part of the spec — tell us how you work and we will steer you to the right one.

Prices in CAD and Seeing Them in Person

Brand-new fixed-height straight desks typically run about $295–$495 CAD. Add a pedestal for locking storage and the range is about $495–$795 CAD. Brand-new sit-stand versions run $695–$1,295 CAD depending on frame and surface size. Browse current models on our straight desk page or start at Ufficio Furniture.
